Waxworms have been a favourite food source amongst bird keepers for many years. Their colour and soft skin make them extremely appealing to insectivorous birds. Waxworms are an excellent year round food source for birds, but in particular, they are a favourite choice during the breeding season. This is because waxworms have soft skin that makes them easily digestable and their excellent nutritional value gives the insatiable chicks the goodness they need to give them the strength to develop and grow.
Not only are waxworms an excellent choice amongst bird keepers, they are rapidly becoming a favourite amongst British bird lovers. Waxworms attract wild birds to their gardens especially during the breeding season. But waxworms can also play an important role for our non-migratory species during the bleak winter months when food sources are extremely scarce and the ground is frozen solid.
Because waxworms have a high moisture content and are rich in both protein and fat they can play a vital role in the survival of our nations dwindling bird population, providing them with the valuable nutrition they need to see them through the winter months.
